Joan Chandos Báez (Staten Island, Nueva York, 9 de enero de 1941), Joan Baez, cantante estadounidense de música folk, conocida como "La reina de la canción protesta". Caracterizada por una voz potente, aguda, próxima a la de una soprano, y con un vibrato controlado para potenciar la dramatización de las letras de las canciones, es la máxima figura de la canción protesta surgida en los años sesenta, al calor de la Guerra de Vietnam. Su repertorio, no obstante, abarca también lo puramente tradicional, el country y el pop-rock.

Hija de un físico mexicano y de una profesora de literatura, prima hermana del físico John Baez, su carrera comienza en Boston, donde consiguió una gran repercusión con su actuación en el Newport Folk Festival de 1959. Como resultado de ello, grabó su disco de debut en octubre de 1960, titulado sólo con su nombre para la compañía Vanguard. Compuesto por 13 canciones tradicionales, algunas de ellas baladas infantiles, sus versiones han resultado con el tiempo casi canónicas. Tuvo un éxito moderado, pero la edición de un segundo volumen de canciones en 1961 hizo recuperar para el gran público aquel primer disco, y ambos se convirtieron en grandes éxitos, como también lo sería su tercer disco: Joan Baez in Concert (1962).

Entre 1962 y 1964, Baez fue el rostro popular de la música folk, siendo la estrella de festivales y giras y cantando en actos políticos, entre los que se incluyen la Marcha sobre Washington de 1963 por los derechos civiles. Durante este periodo, empezó a estudiar el trabajo de Bob Dylan y, paulatinamente, su repertorio se desplazó del material tradicional al de tipo socialmente comprometido, en consonancia con la emergente generación de artistas de los años sesenta. Vivió con Bob Dylan entre 1963 y 1965 y juntos se ganaron el título del Rey y la Reina de la Canción protesta. Luchó en contra de la guerra de Vietnam y a favor de los derechos civiles. Para ello creó Humanitas, una organización internacional pro Derechos Humanos, y en 1963 fundó en Palo Alto un instituto de estudios sobre la no violencia.

Como otros intérpretes de folk, Baez se vio influenciada por la aparición de los Beatles en Estados Unidos y por el folk rock de Dylan. Como consecuencia de ello, aumentó su instrumental, que hasta el momento se basaba únicamente en su guitarra acústica, llegando a usar una orquesta entera en Joan (1967). Continuó experimentando a finales de los sesenta, como se comprueba en discos como Baptism (1968), en el que recita poesía, y en Any Day Now (1968), un doble disco de canciones de Bob Dylan con ambiente de country.

En Marzo de 1968, Baez se casó con el líder antibelicista David Harris, encarcelado por negarse a alistarse. Dado que Harris era aficionado al country, Joan regresó a este estilo en varios discos. Con su álbum de 1972 para A&M Records Come From the Shadows se aproximó al pop.

A finales de los sesenta y principios de los setenta, Baez se centró en el pop rock y empezó a escribir sus propias canciones, lo que culminó en el superventas Diamonds & Rust (1975), que fue seguido por el enteramente escrito por ella Gulf Winds (1976). Grabó varios discos para diversas compañías y, en 1993, Vanguard realizó Rare, Live & Classic, un triple disco de retrospectiva. Cantando en español, Joan Baez tuvo una versión de "Gracias a la vida" de la chilena Violeta Parra, en 2 versiones, la primera como solista y la segunda a dúo con la argentina Mercedes Sosa.

Ha escrito dos autobiografías: Daybreak (1968) y And a Voice to Sing With (1987).

También se le conoce como la intérprete de "Rejoice in the sun", principal canción en la poco comprendida película (para la época), "Silent Running" o (en español) "Naves Misteriosas", la que habla de la tremenda importancia de la protección al medio ambiente, en un futuro próximo, llevando "Biodomos" al espacio con los últimos bosques y fauna -al estilo Noético- existentes en La Tierra antes del desastre natural provocado por el hombre y su "civilización".
